Diet /6?

Is that a 2.2 (same angle of dangle) or an aluminum block /6?

I don’t know about coincidence, but their chairs look comfy and dignified

I did a show last year with a VIP area and the head designer brought in a bunch of their school chairs, oooooOOOO vintage!!! And she was fucking out of her mind serious about these chairs and where they needed to go.... I hated every second of it.

The most underappreciated designers/architects of all time. Somehow their designs all just seem filled with joy. I can’t explain the way their work makes me feel, it’s that good.

Honestly I think they’re kinda overrated, but still my favorite. I’m also relatively uncultured in Designers despite having 2 or 3 design history classes under my belt.

I also do every paper I can on the Eames because I’ve watched the documentary like 6 times. I’m doing one for Art History now

I don’t know. I think there’s something inherently noble about the fact that they designed many products with the intention of bringing good design to the masses at an affordable price.

But here we are, in 2016 and you can’t get a genuine Eames piece for less than $300, and that’s for the elephant, which doesn’t really do anything.

The designs are timeless, and I hope to own some someday but they did fail in that respect.

In my opinion that’s Herman Miller’s failure, not the Eames. This gets into the really interesting world of design licencing where, because Herman Miller owns the rights, they can charge whatever they want. The same goes for Aalto chairs. There was a really good Dezeen piece on it a while back.

Yeah, I never thought about that. At the same time Herman Miller does a good job of keeping build quality really high. It would be a shame if legit Eames designs were built shoddily. Also I feel like the designs wouldn’t be as special if everyone and their brother can afford it.

Part of the appeal is the exclusiveness, that’s something that someone like me works for, it’s a mark of success for the architect/ designer type.

It’s funny how these things tag them self along with how the design feels.

I agree with some of this, HM does keep the quality high but you pay far more for the name than you do for the quality. As an Architect I feel like good design shouldn’t be available only to the rich. I admire designers who think about the less fortunate far more than those who cater to the rich. In my mind we only design for the rich in order to subsidize designing for the poor.

I agree with that.

Although today good design is accessible, and I think the Eames are to thank.

Even though I personally don’t like Ikea they do make some pretty well designed products. Granted having good products is one thing, putting them in your house is another thing. Some people just have no clue as how to balance a room.

Even retail stores have some nice pieces seasonally. It’s a crapshoot, but once in a while it’s something worth buying. Most furniture stores are pretty stodgy though.
